* Not Just Any Daisy *

The Perennial Plant Association is pleased to announce the Perennial of the Year for 2003 as Leucanthemum ‘Becky’. I t was selected on the basis of its bright white, large single flowers that bloom for a long season and its sturdy stems that are strong enough to keep this daisy upright after a heavy rain.

This cultivar of an old-fashioned favorite is easily grown in full sun, but tolerant of partial shade. They do not tolerate wet feet and require well- drained soil. Deadheading encourages re-bloom and extends the flowering season into autumn. To tidy the plant up after flowering cut the stems back. ‘Becky’ is superior to other Shasta daisies due to its robust habit and performance in both southern and northern climates. It is hardy to zone 4 and reaches a height of 3’.

Leucanthemum ‘Becky’ is a wonderful choice to grow as a specimen or in large groups in the garden. Try ‘Becky ‘ in the center of a whiskey barrel surrounded by other perennials and annuals (see diagram below) and enjoy the butterflies she will attract up onto your deck.

‘Becky’ is one of the main anchors of the summer border. Plant with Persovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage) and Monarda ‘Jacob Kline’ for a backdrop of red, white and blue. Complete the eye-catching combination by placing Scabiosa columbaria ‘Butterfly Blue’ and Veronica ‘Royal Candles’ in front.
